Here are some questions we have been receiving.
Q: What is NFRC?
A: The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is an independent nonprofit organization formed to service the public good through education and research. The NFRC board of directors and membership have established seven standing committees to coordinate the development and implementation of a universal rating and labeling system that can allow consumers and builder to easily compare the differences in performance levels of various fenestration products. Click here to link to NFRC web page.
Q: Does every window and door manufacturer test with NFRC?
A: No- Although it has become the industry standard it is not required for a manufacture to sell a NFRC certified product. You will not receive a tax credit if you use one of these windows and more importantly you will most likely not get the performance advantages you require to save energy.
Q: Are Kelly Windows tested to NFRC standards?
A: Yes- Remember-you need to choose windows and doors that are not only tested to these standards but perform with a SHGC and U-factor of no more than .30 to get your tax credit. We have several styles of windows and doors that meet these requirements.
Q: What is SHGC
A: Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how well a product blocks heat produced by sunlight. SHGC is expressed as a number between 0 and .87. The lower the SHGC number, The less solar heat is transferred. The "Stimulus bill" requires a product with no more than .30 SHGC be used. Manufactures can apply a low-e (low emissivity) coating to glass to help reduce SHGC. These coatings help reduce heat loss in winter months as well as reduce solar heat gain in the summer. Tinted glass and gas filling can also enhance the performance of your new window and doors,
Q:What is U-factor
A: U-factor or U-value is the measurement of how well a building material, typically windows and doors, keeps heat inside a building structure. The lower the u-factor the greater the products resistance to heat transfer and the better its insulating ability. As with SHGC specialty glass packages can help to improve a window or doors u-factor performance levels. The "Stimulus Bill" requires a windows or door with no more than a .30 U-factor.
